Do You Soak Wood Pellets Before Smoking?

A common question I get asked by those new to grilling is, ‘do you soak wood pellets before smoking?’.

And it’s a great question! Especially, as it is recommended to soak wood chips before using them for smoking in order to prevent them from burning too quickly and to add more smoke flavor to the food.

But wood pellets are different to wood chips.

You do not need to soak wood pellets before smoking.

And in this guide, I am going to explain why it is not necessary as well as answer any other questions you may have on ‘do you soak pellets before smoking?’.

What are Smoking Pellets?

Smoking pellets are small cylindrical-shaped pellets made of compressed sawdust and wood shavings that are used primarily as a fuel source in pellet grills and smokers.

These pellets are made from a variety of woods such as hickory, mesquite, apple, and more, and they offer a convenient and clean way to add a smoky flavor to food.

They burn at a consistent rate and produce little ash, which makes them a popular choice among grillers such as myself.

They come in different flavors, allowing you to add a variety of flavors to your food.

They are also used in some industrial settings, such as in meat processing plants, as they are a more efficient and eco-friendly way to add smoke flavor to meat products.

How Do You Use Wood Pellets?

To use wood pellets for smoking, you will need a pellet grill or smoker, such as a Traeger Pellet Grill.

Here are the general steps for using wood pellets:

  1. Fill the hopper of the grill or smoker with the desired type of wood pellets.
  2. Turn on the grill or smoker and allow it to heat up to the desired temperature.
  3. Once the grill or smoker is at the desired temperature, place the food that you want to smoke on the grill grates or smoker racks.
  4. Close the lid of the grill or smoker and allow the food to smoke for the desired amount of time.
  5. Check the food periodically and adjust the temperature or time as needed.
  6. Once the food is cooked to your liking, remove it from the grill or smoker and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

It is important to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific pellet grill or smoker, as the instructions may vary depending on the model you have.

Do You Soak Wood Pellets Before Smoking?

No, it is not necessary to soak wood pellets before smoking.

Why? Well, wood pellets are made from compressed sawdust and wood shavings, and as such, already have a high moisture content. Soaking them would not be beneficial and may cause them to become too wet and not burn properly.

Instead, wood pellets can be placed directly into the hopper of a pellet grill or smoker, and then the grill or smoker can be started as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

What Happens When Pellets Come into Contact with Water?

When wood pellets come into contact with water, they will absorb the moisture and become wet.

Depending how long they have been exposed to water and for how long will also influence what happens to your pellets once wet.

I wanted to see the full extent of what would happen, so I decided to experiment with my own wood pellets.

With a light spray the wood pellets were only mildly impacted, however within a minute of being fully emerged in water they started to break down.

Surprisingly, I thought they would absorb the water quicker than what they did. Instead, they remained rather hard, but started to crumble and break.

However, after 5 minutes of being submerged in water they were fully broken down and did not hold any pellet form.

Can I Still Use Wood Pellets If They Become Wet?

If wood pellets become wet, they should be discarded, and new dry pellets should be used.

Even if your pellets are only mildly impacted by water, you should still consider discarding them because it may cause them not to burn properly, which will affect the quality of the smoke flavor and cooking process.

Furthermore, when wet pellets are placed in a pellet grill or smoker, they can cause the auger or hopper to become clogged, which can cause the grill or smoker to malfunction.

Wet pellets can also cause the grill or smoker to produce more ash, which can lead to a buildup of ash in the firepot and can be a fire hazard, which I discuss more in my how to clean a pellet grill guide!

Additionally, wet pellets will not burn at high enough temperatures to properly smoke food, which can result in food that is not cooked properly or that does not have the desired smoky flavor.

Pellets that have been exposed to moisture can be dried in a low-heat oven, but I really think it’s not worth the risk using them in smoking.

Instead, I would discard them and look to purchase some new ones. My guide on the best place to buy pellets for a smoker might just come in handy!
